The Euro 2008 soccer tournament has just begun but you can still sign-up to be a "Socio da Selecção". Loosely translated, "Socio da Selecção" means that you are a Portugal National Soccer team supporter. Its like being a season ticket holder but without the actual tickets to see the games. At last count there were about 200 thousand Portugal National team supporters already registered on the site.

The Portugal supporter fan card is totally free and even has a few perks associated with it. You will be intitled to a (small) discount on the purchase of Portugal National Team home game tickets. There will also be random drawings of official team Jerseys (until June 15th), as well as tickets for both the World Cup qualifying games and the actual World Cup itself.

Euro 2008

The European 2008 Soccer Tournament (Euro 2008) started last Saturday, and in the opening game of the first round Portugal easily beat Turkey 2 to 0, and confirmed their status as one of the favorites to win it all. In the other game of Group A play, the Czech Republic beat Switzerland 1 to 0, but the Swiss were surprisingly the better team.

Portugal will meet up with the Czech team on Wednesday in what is expected to be the game that will decide which of these two teams comes out ahead in group A.

Assuming Portugal goes on to second round play, they will try to come in first in Group A in order to avoid playing Germany, which is expected to win their group also. Germany already beat the Polish squad in their first game, and has two easier games against Austria and Croatia. The first place team of group A will play the second place team of group B and vise versa.
